An end-suction centrifugal pump can be long coupled (separate coupling & motor) or close coupled (where the motor is in the same unit with the pump) often referred to as a Monobloc. Usually on larger end-suction pumps, the casing’s main feature is a dual volute to reduce the forces acting on the impeller, motor, shaft and bearings.

It is the most common type of pump worldwide. Its construction is relatively simple as is the operation. It can range from tiny flows and pressures to huge flows and moderate pressures. Usually, it is a single stage pump but some manufacturers make multi-stage versions. The most common materials used are cast iron, bronze and stainless steel.

There are many different versions of impellers available – enclosed radial flow (most common), semi-open, vortex, helical screw, disc rotor and barske design impeller.

End suction pumps are usually designed as a back pull out pump with a spacer coupling which facilitates maintenance without disturbing the alignment with the motor. Hence, they save on space and eliminate the need for motor alignment.

Some Manufacturers provide tangential discharge pumps which facilitate higher efficiencies, for example, some of the larger tangential discharge pumps can provide 90% efficiency.

Some typical applications for an end suction pump;

  • Any transfer or circulation of liquid. Handles clean or dirty liquids, and liquids with low viscosity.
  • Solids Handling
  • Slurries
  • Chemicals
